According to foreign media, a supercapacitor is an electronic device that can store and release energy and has a layer of electrolyte -- a conductive material that can be solid, liquid or intermediate between solid and liquid. Now the Massachusetts institute of technology, in collaboration with several institutions, has developed a new liquid that could improve the efficiency and stability of such devices while reducing their flammability.

 

 

The liquid's efficient energy storage capacity stems from the fact that the molecules inside it will arrange themselves and eventually form a layered structure on the surface of the metal electrode. Such molecules have a tail at one end, which is aligned so that the head is either towards or away from the electrode, and the tail gathers in the middle, forming a sandwich-like structure called a self-organizing nanostructure.

 

This highly ordered structure prevents the "overfiltration" that can occur in other ionic liquids. In other ionic liquids, the first layer of ions (charged atoms or molecules) on the surface of the electrode contains more ions than the corresponding charge on the surface, resulting in a more dispersed distribution of ions, or a thicker layer of ions, resulting in an inefficient energy storage. But the researchers' liquid has a special structure where the charge is concentrated on the surface of the electrode.

 

The new material, called SAILs, or surface-active ionic liquids, has multiple applications for high-temperature energy storage, such as in high-temperature environments such as oil RIGS or chemical plants.
